We are More Alike than We Thought
2023
plywood, three channels audio
variable size

The interactive sound installation arises from the artist's interest in the emotional bond between individuals and places. Three speakers each continuously play audio that Shiyao recorded from a public space in Calgary. The QR code on the side of each box links to the public space sounds in other cities. Audio recordings participants are instructed to choose a public space that they feel connected within their cities. Participants from other cities all have immigrant experiences or have relocated to a different region. This installation calls upon audiences to contribute to its final form. Analogous to the viewers’ movement and interaction in space, the installation is constantly changing. The dynamic sounds form an abstract stage of cultural conflicts and questioning how should we engage with other cultures.
