Shiyao Fu is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, installation, and printmaking. Her practice employs paradoxical visual conditions and uses materials metaphorically—particularly through the coexistence of the organic and the synthetic—to translate sensorial observations of place. These pairings unsettle fixed boundaries, constructing a complexity that is both present and unresolved, remaining in a state of continual formation. Through a material-driven process grounded in negotiating with materials, she creates works that embrace the agency, resistance, and limitations of the materials themselves. The relationships between materials in her works become a way to examine how different entities within an ecosystem negotiate and transform one another.

Shiyao received her BFA from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2018 and her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2026. She participated in an artist residency at the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation and in the 2023–2024 RBC Emerging Visual Artists Program at Arts Commons. She is a recipient of the Visual Arts and New Media Individual Project Grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, as well as the Ernestine Betsberg and Arthur Osver Scholarship.
